When I was in college thinking about the future and specifically about my career and how it would shape up, I would often find myself grappling with anxiety, uncertainty and fear of the unknown which I think is characteristic of student life. Today when I look back and reflect on my journey, I sometimes find it difficult to believe that it has been nearly 2 decades. One thing I was sure of was that I wanted to be financially independent and getting a full-time job was the safest bet I had at the time. So, after a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I went on to pursue my master’s degree in Personnel Management with the anticipation that this would be a sure shot ticket to get a job in hand even before I pass out. Little did I know how far from the truth this was.
In a day and age, where digital and mobile phones were still very nascent and almost non-existent, I got my first breakthrough by “walk-in” interview. These last 2 decades for me have been transformational in more ways than I can ever imagine – professionally and personally. It has not only got me the independence I was looking for but has changed my worldview on almost all aspects of life. The learnings, exposures, successes, failures have all shaped my overall personality and made me the person I am today. I couldn’t be more thankful for all the assignments, people and teams I have worked with over the years.
And while I was learning, growing and transforming, the world around was also changing what with the advent of the internet and mobile phone where everything is available at the click of a button! The technological advancements of the past 2 decades have been phenomenal and the coming years are set to be even more revolutionary with the advent of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
I often get asked what I see when I am interviewing candidates especially freshers? There are enough and more articles, videos and an entire industry out there which is preparing you to get hired. What I can say which is going to be any different from what you already know? It would of course depend on the role, level, seniority, leadership role etc and in no way is this an exhaustive list.
But if I were to largely tell you, here are a couple of key aspects which I consider when evaluating candidates:
In a fast paced, dynamic environment in which businesses are operating in, coming up with a solution mindset is what organizations are looking for. Do you have clarity of thought and fire in your belly? Now you would rightly ask how we can even assess something as subjective as an attitude, but trust me, it is evident especially for us who are in the business of evaluating people all the time. This is also why organizations evaluate culture fitment at the interview stage when interviewing candidates.
Furthermore, if you have an aspirational or a dream company to work with, keep pursuing them, try and stay in touch with the hiring teams and if you have companies like believe where recruiters are always ensuring their database is up to date & who track potential candidates, you will at some point get a breakthrough. Also, keep networking and connecting with people. Music Industry is especially a small world and often people know one another, and word of mouth plays an important role.
Let me share with you an inside trick – as an interviewee, you decide the course of the interview and not the other way around. So as much as you would feel otherwise, it is you who can control the direction in which you want to get the questions directed to by talking about the projects or areas you are most comfortable with. Interviewer will inadvertently get moving in that direction. Another thing would be to ensure you have a few areas which you have identified as a learning opportunity for yourself, because all of us are work in progress.
Always remember, you are more than the pieces of paper which we call a resume, so never lose heart if you do not get something immediately or to your liking. Like my colleague says, “if there is a job, there is a candidate for it”. It’s only a matter of time before you find a job which is made for you.
With that I would like to wish you all the success in your job search.
